Best RackNerd VPS for a VPN (WireGuard or OpenVPN)

A personal VPN is one of the lightest things you can run on a VPS. WireGuard and OpenVPN need very little CPU and memory, so the cheapest plans are usually enough. What matters more is where the server is and how much traffic you get.

What to look for

  • Location. The server's country decides which sites and services see you as being in that country, and how much delay you add. Pick the place you actually want to appear from.
  • Bandwidth. Every byte you send through the VPN counts against the plan's monthly traffic. If you stream or download a lot, choose a plan with a high allowance.
  • KVM. These are KVM virtual servers, so you control the whole system. That makes WireGuard and OpenVPN straightforward to install.
  • RAM. 512 MB to 1 GB is enough for a VPN on its own. If you also want to run something else on the same server, go up to 2 GB.

Good to know

Read RackNerd's terms of service for what is and isn't allowed on your server before you build something on it. A VPN on your own server hides your traffic from your local network, but the server's address belongs to RackNerd and is not anonymous.
