RackNerd 11.11 and flash sales explained

Part 2 of the buyer's series on getting a good RackNerd deal through the sale season.

Black Friday gets most of the attention, but it is not the only time cheap plans appear. The 11.11 sale comes about two weeks earlier, and flash sales can turn up at almost any time of year. This guide explains what each one is, how they differ from Black Friday, and how to buy quickly without buying on impulse.

The honest limit: nobody outside RackNerd knows when a flash sale will start or what it will include. The aim here is to help you react well when one appears, not to predict it.

What is in this guide

What the 11.11 sale is

11.11 is short for 11 November. The date started as Singles' Day in China and grew into one of the biggest online shopping days in the world. Many hosting providers now run a sale around it too. In 2026, 11 November falls on a Wednesday.

For a buyer, 11.11 matters for two reasons:

  • It comes first. It lands about two weeks before Black Friday, so it is often the first big chance of the season to pick up a cheap plan.
  • It can be shorter. An 11.11 sale may only last a day or two, or it may be built around a few plans released at set times. Check the details each year rather than assuming it works like last year.

Start times vary. Some sales follow a US time zone and others follow a different one. If you are outside the US, convert the time before you rely on it.

What a flash sale is

A flash sale is a deal that is only available for a short window, often a few hours, and often with a small amount of stock. It may be announced in advance, or it may simply appear.

Flash sales are not tied to one date. They can happen during big events like 11.11 and Black Friday, and at other times of the year as well. That is what makes them easy to miss: there is no fixed day to put in your calendar.

A flash sale plan is usually a special plan made for that sale. It may have an unusual mix of specs, a limited choice of locations and its own terms. Treat each one as a new product and check it properly, even when you are in a hurry.

How they compare with Black Friday

These are general patterns, not rules. Any sale can be different.

If you have not read it yet, How to get a RackNerd Black Friday deal covers preparation in more detail. Almost all of it applies to 11.11 too.

Decide your buying rule in advance

Short sales reward people who decide before the deal appears. A buying rule is one or two sentences that say what you will buy and what you will not. When a flash sale lands, you compare it with your rule instead of with your excitement.

Here is an example rule. It is illustrative, so swap in your own needs:

  • "I will buy one Linux VPS with at least 2 GB of RAM, in a US west coast or US central location, for no more than my yearly budget. I will not buy a second server unless I have a job for it today."

To write yours, answer these questions:

  1. What job is it for? The size guides help you match a job to memory: 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB.
  2. What is the smallest plan that does the job? Bigger is not better if you will not use it.
  3. Which locations are acceptable? Pick two, so a sold-out first choice does not stop you. Choosing a VPS location explains how.
  4. What is your most for the year? Include any extras you know you will add.
  5. How many will you buy? For most people the answer is one.

Using alerts so you hear in time

For a sale that may only last a few hours, the hard part is finding out in time. This site checks the RackNerd store automatically and can email you when something matching your choices appears.

  • On the home page, enter your email and tick the sales you care about: flash sales, Black Friday deals or 11.11 deals.
  • You can also ask to hear about new plans, restocks or price drops, filtered by type and location. Match the filters to your buying rule so you only get emails you would act on.
  • Keep an eye on the sales page, which lists sale plans as they are found.
  • Add the alert sender to your contacts or safe senders list so the email does not land in spam.

The site checks the store on a schedule, not every second, so there can be a short delay between a plan appearing and you hearing about it. For the most popular flash plans, that delay can matter. It is one more reason to have your account and buying rule ready.

The two-minute check

Speed matters in a flash sale, but a quick check takes about two minutes and saves you from a plan you will regret. On the order page, confirm:

CheckWhat to look for
Does it meet my rule?RAM, location and budget all match what you decided.
Billing cycleMonthly or yearly. A yearly price is paid up front for the whole year.
RenewalWhether the price stays the same when it renews. If it is not stated, assume it may not.
Disk and bandwidthEnough room for your system, apps and logs, and a monthly transfer allowance that fits.
Operating systemThe Linux distribution you want is offered. For Windows, check it is a Windows VPS plan.
TermsThe refund policy and acceptable use policy for this plan, since sale plans can differ.

If any line fails, let the deal go. Another one will come.

If you miss one

Missing a flash sale is normal. Plenty of buyers do, every time.

  • Watch for a restock. Some sale plans come back for a short time. Restock alerts on the home page help here.
  • Wait for the next event. If you miss 11.11, Black Friday is about two weeks later, and more flash sales may follow through the end of the year.
  • Compare with a regular plan. If you need a server now, a regular plan may cost a little more but be available today. The cheapest RackNerd VPS guide helps you compare.
  • Do not chase a different plan just to buy something. If nothing in stock meets your rule, waiting is the right choice.

Common mistakes

  • Stockpiling. Buying several cheap servers "in case" is common in sale season. Each one needs updates and security work, and an unused plan is money spent on nothing.
  • Buying an odd plan without a job for it. A flash plan with lots of disk but little memory, or the reverse, is only good value if your job needs exactly that.
  • Counting swap as RAM. Swap is a safety net when memory runs out, not extra RAM. It is much slower than real memory.
  • Reading "unmetered" as "unlimited". Unmetered does not mean unlimited. Bandwidth and CPU use are still subject to fair-use limits.
  • Assuming upgrades keep the deal price. If you upgrade or change a sale plan later, the price may change. Check first.
  • Leaving a new server open. Once it is running, follow securing your VPS and setting up SSH keys before you install anything else.

Limits

  • No guarantee of a deal. A sale may not include the size, type or location you want.
  • Alerts are not instant. The site checks on a schedule, so a very short flash sale can sell out before an alert reaches you.
  • A sale plan is still an unmanaged VPS. You look after the software, updates and backups yourself. Do not assume backups are included.
  • Not always the cheapest choice overall. If you only need one simple website, shared hosting may suit you better than any VPS deal. If you only need a private VPN for browsing, a paid VPN service may be simpler. See VPS vs VPN.

When to step up

Most flash and 11.11 plans are small, because small plans are what sell fastest. A small plan is fine for a VPN, a light website or learning Linux. Consider a bigger plan instead if:

One 4 GB plan is often easier to manage than two or three 1 GB plans bought during different sales.
