RackNerd VPS for self-hosting (Nextcloud, Vaultwarden and more)

Self-hosting means running your own copy of services like a file sync app, a password manager, a notes app or a photo library, instead of renting them. A VPS is a handy place to do it: it is always on, always online and doesn't need your home internet.

What to look for

  • RAM. One or two small apps fit in 2 GB. Running several, or anything with a database and a search index, wants 4 GB or more.
  • Disk. Files and photos add up. If storage is the main point, sort by price per GB below.
  • Location. Choose somewhere close to you for faster file sync.

Good habits

  • Run apps in containers and put a reverse proxy with automatic HTTPS in front of them.
  • Keep a backup somewhere else. A VPS can fail, and a single copy of your data on it is not a backup.
  • Keep the system and the apps updated, and only open the ports you need.
