RackNerd VPS for a Minecraft or game server

Game servers are hungrier than most things people put on a cheap VPS. Memory and CPU matter, and a plan that is fine for a website can struggle once players join. These are the in-stock plans with at least 4 GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores.

How much do you need?

  • Minecraft, a few friends, no mods: around 2 to 4 GB of RAM.
  • Modded Minecraft or a larger group: 6 to 8 GB or more, and a faster CPU.
  • Other games: check the game's own server requirements, then add some room for the operating system.

What else matters

  • CPU speed. Many game servers lean on one fast core rather than many slow ones. Cores on a VPS are shared with other customers, so speed can vary.
  • Location. Put the server near your players. A few tens of milliseconds make a game feel noticeably different.
  • Disk. Worlds and backups grow. Leave room for several backups.
  • Bandwidth. A busy server uses a lot of traffic over a month.
