RackNerd VPS for a personal website or blog

A small VPS can run a personal site, a blog or a portfolio for a few dollars a month or less. You get a whole server to yourself, with more freedom than basic hosting, and the job of looking after it.

How much RAM?

  • A static site or a small blog: 1 GB is usually enough.
  • WordPress with a few plugins: 2 GB leaves room for the database and caching.
  • Several sites, or a busy one: 4 GB or more.

VPS or shared hosting?

With a VPS you install and update the web server, the database and the security fixes yourself. That is more work, but you control everything. Shared hosting is set up for you and is the easier choice if you just want a site online. Here are RackNerd's shared plans in stock:

Tips

  • Choose a location close to most of your visitors.
  • Turn on automatic security updates and keep regular backups, ideally somewhere other than the same server.
  • Put a free CDN in front of the site if you get visitors from all over the world.
